Tough Titty

I’ve been lucky to have supportive people around me as I breastfed our youngest child. His birthday is today, and the little stinker is 2. He’s been weaned for 6 days. No one (except my hubby) ever asked me when we were stopping or expressed any concern about it. Sure it was a little awkward breastfeeding a toddler sometimes but it was all we knew. I didn’t really want to wean him cold turkey, but he’s not a kid that seems to understand moderation. Either he’s getting his “milkies” from mama, or he’s not. And now, he’s not. Was this an easy task? Not really. It was most of 5 days constantly telling him “no more milkies” and “milkies all gone”. Until just yesterday he still would stick his hand down my shirt and fish around. Like a mechanic checking for loose wires and hoses. All seems in order, give me my milkies!

The reason we decided to wean him was mostly for two reasons. The first reason being that he co-sleeps with us and has yet to sleep longer than 4 hours. Which means in 2 yrs, 9 months + I haven’t slept a solid 8 hours yet. Yeah, I am tired. I also am sick of being pawed at by insistent hands. Basically, I was ready to wean him. I did my time, and then some so I felt completely justified in making this decision, but how on earth was I going to do this?

It turns out my hubby is quite motivated to get the munchkin out of our bed and away from my tatas. Motivated enough that he volunteered to take the night shift for 3 nights straight. I slept on the couch, out of arms reach, and he dealt with the little agitated munchkin. “MAMA” I could hear from my room before he would go to bed. Poor guy. He just wanted his comfort device and warm mama to cuddle with. But it worked. By Sunday night I was sleeping in my own bed, and he slept in his own (still in our room, but in a toddler bed, bonus).

Then the craziest thing happened. Last night he slept through the night in his bed. All the way through. 8:30pm until 7am. Goodness it was the best birthday present he could have given himself (and me). Here’s hoping that it wasn’t a fluke.

My breasts? Well they are adjusting. The left side understood the situation pretty quickly, but the right? She took a little convincing. She’s still a little sore and full but it’s getting better everyday.

XOXO
